Materials Support

Team Leaders: Fran Roscello and Karen Sperrazza

Recommendations:

Critical Issues:
  • Instructional needs
  • Recreational needs

Goal:
Provide access to a robust collection of print and digital resources to instructional purposes for the entire school community.

Students and teachers need access to a robust collection of print and digital resources that have been curriated for their instructional purposes. Students also need access to a wide variety of reading materials that reflects their diverse backgrounds and interests to satisfy their recreational reading needs.

Objectives:
  • Retain funding for library materials that is separate from software and textbook support and ensure these funds are being spent as they are intended
  • Allow for eContent library purchasing
  • Review the requirement for ILL policy for reimbursable funds (most eContent is licensed and cannot be provided to others through ILL)
  • Databases are available through statewide purchase, how can eBooks be procured in the same way

Suggested Discussion Items
  • Definition of “library books” to meets today’s needs.
  • Current funding amounts are not sufficient to provide necessary resources
  • There is a lack of oversight in how these funds are spent - Is there an audit system that could be used to determine if schools are spending these funds as they are intended?
  • Balancing curation with instructional needs (CCLS - text complexity, recreational reading, and leveling)
  • Beyond print resources - eContent
  • Expand NOVELny to include an eBook collection
    • Determine how NY school libraries can leverage economies of scale through statewide eBook purchasing
    • If state purchases eBooks there is no need to worry about ILL to other New York State school libraries
